5th-7th Graders Take an Overnight Camping Trip

On May 17th-18th, the Outdoor Club hosted a memorable overnight camping trip to Steamboat Rock State Park for students in grades 5th-7th. 5 SGS students participated in this unique opportunity to explore the outdoors, develop new skills, and connect with nature. Chaperones Dave Holte and Melanie Mildrew led the group, alongside Upper School freshman, Connor King, who supported and guided younger participants throughout the weekend.

The trip began Saturday morning, with students departing from SGS. Upon arrival at the campground, participants dove into hands-on activities designed to build foundational outdoor skills. These included setting up tents, preparing group meals, and learning essential camp craft techniques. Students also had the chance to hike through Northrup Canyon and up Steamboat Rock, where they enjoyed sweeping views.

Beyond the physical activities, the weekend fostered camaraderie, personal responsibility, and confidence in outdoor settings. The weather cooperated, the food was hearty, and the energy was high throughout the trip. By Sunday afternoon, the group returned to Spokane tired but fulfilled, with plenty of stories to share and new skills to build on in future adventures.

Special thanks to all the chaperones and mentors who made this experience safe, educational, and fun!
