Hi Mentors and Mentees,

We will host a Halloween Themed Costume Contest for you and your mentees at LUNCH on Friday, October 30th in the Dragon Room starting at 12:45. There will be prizes for the top three themed costumes. Please get together with your mentor and mentee and start brainstorming what you want to be. In the past when folks have ordered costumes, they had issues getting it in time so please plan ahead.

The panel judges will be the 3rd grade class.

Join Melanie Mildrew on Saturday, January 23rd or a backcountry ski tour across form Lookout Ski Resort. Leave SGS at 8:00am and return by 5:30pm. Bring a lunch, water, backpack to carry avalanche probe, shovel, and snowshoes/skis (snowboard) if you do not have skins. Please see Melanie with any questions about gear. Also have your parents fill out the permission slip on Final Forms.

Join the Outdoor Club for an overnight on Mt. Spokane. We will build snow caves outside the Mountaineers’ Chalet and spend the night in them. We will leave SGS at 9:30am on Saturday, January 30th and return by 12:00pm at SGS Sunday, the 31st in the school vehicles. Dave Holte and Melanie Mildrew will lead this trip. Cost is $50.00 and includes all meals. This trip is open to 8th through 12th graders, and we need a minimum of 5 students to make this trip happen with a maximum of 11 students. We need payment and permission slips signed on Final Forms by Wednesday, January 27th. Please see either of us with your questions.

We will need to meet with trip participants at lunch on Wednesday, January 27th to review gear list, create trip menu, and hand out gear to be borrowed.

Skiing and snowboarding are dangerous. The mountain is often foggy, and the conditions can be icy and cold. This is not the place for non-skiers/snowboarders. Students are not always with an adult. They are expected to ski with a buddy and must check in with Melanie. They must bring appropriate clothing and equipment. Helmets are required!
Skis and snowboards must be dropped off at Metters by the morning of the ski bus.
Students may rent equipment for $25.00. Then $6.00 more for a helmet and $17.00 for boots only.
Lift ticket is $30.00 and bus fare is $10.00 so $40.00 for the evening ($10 if you have a season pass!) Extra costs are snacks and dinner.
If students want a lesson, we need to have a group of at least three all learning the same sport (skiing or snowboarding) and the cost is $45.00 per person. I must know this the week before the ski bus.
The bus leaves SGS at 3:20pm and will drop students off at Yokes on HWY 2 at 9:00pm, SGS at 9:30pm and then Grocery Outlet at 4th and Cedar at 10:00pm (This is the parking lot that is across 4th Ave from Chevron Station and McDonalds).

Schweitzer Ski Trip – February 20th -21st
For 7th through 12th Graders
Limited to 11 students with a minimum of 6 to make this trip happen!
Leave Saturday, February 20th at 7:30 AM
Return Sunday, February 21st at 6:30 PM
Cost is $270.00 for those without a season pass and $100.00 for those with a season pass. The cost does not include gear rentals. You will need your own spending money for lunch and snacks. Dinner and breakfast are included.
We are guests of the Wolffs’ condo who have graciously offered to host the Outdoor Club for this experience. Bring personal sleeping bags and mats because we will be sharing bedrooms and floor space. Remember Helmets are required. Money and waivers are due February 17th.
Optional avalanche beacon lesson on Saturday and backcountry run if people have backcountry gear. If you would like to participate in this, please let Melanie know by February 17th. Please bring a backpack so you may carry the provided avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel. You are welcome to meet us if you are interested in this even if you are not on the trip.

Upper School Night Nordic Ski on Friday, March 12th
for 9th -12th graders

Join Dave Holte and Melanie Mildrew after school for a night of cross-country skiing at Mt. Spokane. We will leave at 3:30 PM and return by 7:00 PMish. Headlamps are required. The outdoor program has limited cross-country skis that students may borrow for this event or you may bring your own. Sign up by Tuesday, March 10th. Snacks and hot drinks provided.

Suggested Gear:

* Headlamp
* Cross country skis, boots, and poles (Outdoor Program has a limited supply to loan out)
* At least 1 liter of water
* Snacks
* Backpack to carry food, water, and extra layers
* Raincoat
* Warm hat

Introduce yourself to the outdoor program by participating in a unique camping opportunity for students in grades 5 through 7. This trip can accommodate up to 16 students so if you are interested in joining make sure you sign up quickly! Dave Holte and Melanie Mildrew will chaperone this outing to Steamboat Rock State Park Campground. We will pick students up at SGS or at Grocery Outlet. The cost is $70.00 per person and includes transportation, food, and campground fees. To sign up, your parent must sign the waiver on Final Forms and you must pay the trip price either by sending a check in made out to SGS or by emailing in the business Jahnna Fetter (jahnna.fetter@sgs.org) office authorizing her to bill your account (Please cc Melanie so she has an accurate number of who signs up and when). At first this will be open, and each grade will have 5 spots reserved and after 3/1/27 those spots will be released to those on the waiting list in order that they were placed on it.

We will leave on Saturday, May 1st at 9am from SGS, 9:30 from Grocery Outlet, and return to Grocery Outlet at 3:30, SGS at 4:00 on Sunday, May 2nd.

We will be introducing basic camp craft skills and hiking in Northrup Canyon and on Steamboat Rock. We will have some upper school students working as mentors on this trip. This trip is intended to help students start building basic skills in setting up a tent, hiking and exploring the outdoors, and how to take care of yourself on outings. For students to be successful, they need to have the correct gear for the trip. Please see the list below.

Sleeping bag – not cotton (may borrow from the Outdoor Club)
Sleeping mat (may borrow from the Outdoor Club)
2 water bottles or a hydration system and water bottle (ability to carry a minimum of 2 liters) Mess kit (insulated cup, bowl or plate, fork, spoon)

Appropriate hiking shoes can be sneakers – shoes that fit and support you
