Perhaps no decision was more far-reaching in the first few months of planning for the creation of Saint George’s School than the decision to buy the Davenport Estate. This purchase, bold and serendipitous, would provide the school not just with a location, but with an ethos that would brand its existence from that day forward.
These first students, often described as “pioneers” at Saint George’s, took pride in their status as charter members of the school. There was a sense of adventure, academic accomplishment, camaraderie, and perseverance that became the hallmarks of future Saint George’s students.
The first day of classes for Saint George’s School on Friday, September 16, 1955, was nothing short of a miracle. In just eight months, a school had been created, incorporated, a Board of Trustees selected, funds raised, a Headmaster selected, property and buildings purchased, faculty and staff hired, and students recruited. It was a breathtaking achievement!
George Edwards was Headmaster of Saint George’s School from 1985-1991. He also served as a Trustee of the school from 2008-2014. George began his teaching career at St. Mark’s School of Texas in 1972 where he started a nationally recognized Speech and Debate Program, taught history, coached, served as the Head of the Upper School and interim Headmaster for the 1983 school year. After departing from Saint George’s, George served as the Head of School at Randolph School in Huntsville, AL, Westside School and Epiphany School both of which are in Seattle. He is a veteran of 27 years of service in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard, retiring as a Colonel in 1997. George is married to Kathy Edwards, formerly Kathy Watt, the mother of three Saint George’s students, a SGS Board member and President of the Board from 1981-85. They have lived in Seattle since 1997.
