SGS Wins 2023-24 Scholastic Cup for 4th Year in a Row

For the fourth year in a row, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has awarded Saint George’s School the Scholastic Cup as the top 2B sized high school in the state for academics, athletics and activities. This marks the fifth time SGS has won the Cup in the past six years it has been awarded. (The Cup was not awarded for the 2020-21 school year due to pandemic-related limitations.)

The Scholastic Cup recognizes performance in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. Schools that finish at the top of their respective classifications in state athletic competition receive points, as do schools that finish at the top in team academic performance (highest average GPA). Sportsmanship is also a factor, as schools can lose points for ejections from contests.

Saint George’s finished with 935 points, more than 150 points ahead of second-place Asotin. The teams that contributed to SGS winning the Cup included the Boys and Girls Track & Field teams who both won state championships, as well as the SGS Band, Choir, Drama Program, and Boys Soccer team who were each State Academic Champions with the highest average grade point for their activity or team among 2B schools. Since the inception of the WIAA Scholastic Cup in 2012-13, Saint George’s has finished in the top three schools for our classification all 12 years. SGS has won the Cup five times, been the runner up six times, and finished third once.

“Our success begins in the classroom and carries over into our athletics and activities,” says SGS Athletic Director Ryan Peplinski. “Our participation numbers in arts and athletics are over 95% of the student body. When a school has participation numbers and involvement of that magnitude, combined with great teachers, coaches, and staff, anything is possible. We have so many students who follow and develop their passions at SGS. The Scholastic Cup is a total school award that we are excited and proud to receive!”
