Next SGS Book Club: “Exploring North Woods” by Daniel Mason – May 6th

This month the SGS Book Club will read North Woods by Daniel Mason. The next meeting is Wednesday, May 6, 6:00–8:00 PM in the US Library.

North Woods is a beautifully written novel set in a single New England cabin where multiple people pass through across centuries. Each generation brings its own struggles, hopes, and questions, while the forest remains a steady presence—shaping lives through changing seasons, wildlife, storms, and time. The land itself becomes a central character, inviting readers to consider why people seek out wild places for solitude, healing, inspiration, and perspective. The book gently reminds us that human lives are brief, but our connection to nature endures.

The club will welcome Melanie Mildrew, Director of the Saint George’s School Outdoor Program, as a special guest. Melanie will share insights from her work developing student resilience, confidence, and a meaningful relationship with the outdoors, and will reflect on why time in nature can be such a powerful teacher.

Join the conversation as the group explores themes of place, belonging, and the ways nature shapes our lives—in the pages of the novel and in our own experiences.
