MS Students Take to the Mountain for Nordic Ski Day!

The 7th and 8th students spent February 3rd on a trip to Mt. Spokane participating in our annual Nordic Ski Day, which has been an SGS tradition for over 20 years! Fun Fact: The first ‘ski day’ was held on Mt. Spokane on January 22, 1958.

During this outing, all students were broken up into five different groups, based on their level of ski expertise:

  • The Never-Evers
  • Beginners
  • Intermediates
  • Intermediate-Advanced
  • Advanced

The total roundtrip distance for most groups is around 4 kilometers, except for the Advanced group, whose roundtrip distance is a staggering 6 miles!

The purpose of this annual event is to get students outside, get them experience learning in a new way, and open their minds to the outdoors and outdoor education. Additionally, it helps kids break out of their comfort zone, try something new, and build confidence through succeeding at something challenging and brand new, at least to most of the students.

At the end of the day, all of the kids loaded back up in the school bus and left the mountain with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and a newfound camaraderie. This longstanding tradition will continue to encourage a love for the outdoors and give future students an outlet to bond, grow, and learn!
