About Genius Hour: Genius Hour grew from a practice used by innovative companies that set aside time for employees to pursue passion projects. Saint George’s adapted that idea for students: middle schoolers spend the fall brainstorming, experimenting, and refining ideas before committing to a single project.
How it works:
- Brainstorming: Students generated ideas together—sticky notes in the hall, word clouds, passion brackets, table brainstorming, and podcast listening—using peer collaboration to surface interests.
- Project planning: Each student developed a guiding question and, over five months, researched, iterated, and created a product to share with classmates and the community.
- Skills gained: Beyond content knowledge, Genius Hour teaches organization, time management, research, writing, professional communication, and public speaking—transferable skills for any future path.
- Student choice: By letting students choose how they learn, Genius Hour fosters lasting creativity and ownership of learning.
We’re proud of our middle schoolers for tackling big questions, experimenting fearlessly, and presenting with confidence. Genius Hour not only reveals passions—it builds the practical skills students will carry forward.
