Juniors in Ian Townley’s IB Biology class recently completed a macroinvertebrate-based bioassessment of the Little Spokane River and the Spokane River, studying locations both above and below the point where Hangman Creek enters the river.
Recognized as a reliable method for evaluating the health of river ecosystems, the study gave students an opportunity to examine the connections between water quality, biodiversity, and environmental conditions firsthand.
On Friday, the class floated the Spokane River with Jule Schultz of Spokane Riverkeeper. Jule shared his expertise about the river and discussed conservation efforts led by the Riverkeeper organization. His insights added valuable context to the students’ fieldwork and deepened their understanding of local watershed stewardship.
