Boys Tennis Captures Regional Title

The SGS boys tennis team won both Districts and Regionals behind the stellar play of Robert DeForest, and the doubles pairing of Pelayo Zalba Montes and Gabin Joly. “Robert captured 1st place after winning his matches in decisive fashion, including a championship victory (6-2, 6-3) over last year’s fourth place finisher at State,” says tennis coach Matt Melka. “Pelayo and Gabin battled against a tough Chewelah team to the very end, winning in a third-set tie breaker (6-3, 5-7, 6-6; 11-9).” Those three will compete at the State Tournament starting May 26 in Yakima. Other key contributions to the boys’ Regional title came from Isaac Kos, Ian Reichel, and Gannon Sanborn.

Several SGS girls also competed in the second weekend of the District Tournament, with several vying for a chance to make it to State. The doubles team of Annie Sawyer and Kalea Schlenker battled through the heat to earn 2nd place and secure their spot to State. Other girls that competed in Districts include Bianca Massman, Yasmine Tehrani, Jessie Sawyer, and Reagan Heller. Go Dragons!
