Last week our sixth graders, led by MS teachers Brad Kirsch and Heidi Schillinger, completed a two-day, one-night field trip that capped off their unit on the watershed, salmon and trout life cycles, along with Nez Perce history and culture. Traveling by charter bus, students visited the Nez Perce National Historic Park, Spalding Mission and Museum, Ft. Lapwai, Tolo Lake, White Bird Canyon, the “Heart of the Monster” in Kamiah, Dworshak Hatchery and Dam, and Lower Granite Dam. They had dinner and spent the night in the Wa-a’yas Community Center gymnasium in Kamiah, Idaho.
This place-based, hands-on experience gave our sixth graders direct encounters with the land, waterways, and stories they studied—sparking deeper understanding, respect, and curiosity. The lessons and wisdom they gained on this trip will stay with them for years to come.
